Dentex Trolling Rig

Whether you're an avid fisherman or a beginner/amateur, you've probably already heard of the dentex trolling rig, one of the most effective tools for catching this exceptional fish. The dentex is known for its strength, combativeness and cunning, which makes it a challenging prey for even the most experienced fisherman. In this blog, we will present two types of trolling rigs from our wide range of ready-made fishing products that will help you catch not only dentex, but also other predators of the Adriatic Sea.

1. Dentext Trolling Rig - Dynamic hunting from a boat

Dentex trolling rig is intended for fishermen who like dynamic and complex fishing from a moving vessel. This method allows you to cover a wide area and return to the target locations, which increases the chances of success.

How does it work?

Hunting begins by lowering the bait/live bait into the sea and unwinding the base while driving slowly. The decoy/live bait should lag behind the vessel by up to 90 meters.

Trolling rig is loaded with 65 pcs. of hollow, oblong sinker in the range of 7, 10 and 15 g which is attached to the base/nylon by pressing according to a specific arrangement every 0.5 m, 1 m and 2 m. The sinkers are profiled so that they do not create resistance when passing through the sea and ensure a smooth sailing of the trolling rig. By combining the arrangement and weight of the leads, the desired depth and profile of the trolling rig is achieved so that the lure/live bait follows the bottom line more easily and the possibility of getting stuck on the bottom is reduced.

  • Optimal boat speed: 1.5 to 2 knots.
  • Hunting depth: 30–40 meters.
  • Best time for hunting: in the morning or before dark, and during changes in the direction of the sea current. The ideal time is in the summer during the maestral wind in the afternoon when the sea is wavy and "sparkling".

Characteristics of the trolling rig::

  • Weight: 720 g.
  • Length: 135 m.
  • Base: 1.0 mm (40 m) and 0.90 mm (85 m).
  • Rig: 0.80 mm fluorocarbon (10 m).
  • Sinkers: 65 pieces (7 g, 10 g, 15 g) spaced every 0.5 m, 1 m or 2 m.

Sinkers are specially designed to create no resistance when passing through the sea, ensuring smooth movement of the trolling rig. The lure or live bait lags behind the vessel up to 90 meters, allowing for natural movement and attracting dentex.

Where to hunt?

  • Along the coast.
  • Around capes/points, islands and islets, in channels and bays. In places with strong currents, sea currents that bring oxygen and food. Places rich in plankton followed by smaller fish followed by predators such as dentex.
  • In areas with rocky bottoms and sharp drops, inaccessible parts. Bottoms with rocks and sunken wrecks and caves that serve as ambush sites but also as shelter in case of danger.

What fish can you expect?

In addition to dentex, the trolling rig is also effective for catching other predators such as greater amberjack, bluefish, sea bass, gilt headed bream, greater weever, red scorpion fish and john dory.

2. Common Dentex (grasseater) trolling rig – Hunting in shallows

For those who like hunting in shallow seas, Common Dentex Trolling Rig is a perfect choice. The grass carp lives in areas covered with seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) and a rocky bottom, at depths of 7 to 9 meters.

  • It is most active during the summer months.

Characteristics of the trolling rig::

  • Weight: 105 g.
  • Length: 60 m.
  • Base: 0.60 mm (50 m).
  • Rig: 0.40 mm fluorocarbon (10 m).
  • Hunting depth: 7–9 meters.
  • Recommended boat speed: 1.5–2 knots.

Fishing equipment:

Where to hunt?

  • In areas covered with seagrass.
